A workshop on tests and evaluations for children
with special needs and how results may be used to support classroom
instruction.
Workshop Content
This workshop will focus on issues related to the
assessment of intellectual potential and academic achievement. Attorney
Scott Johnson will discuss the legal requirements for special education
evaluations and eligibility determinations under the IDEA. Dr. Farrall and
Dr. Holden will discuss different measures of IQ, how IQ's are interpreted,
and how they can be used to help define and support a child's style of
learning in the classroom. Dr. Farrall and Dr. Holden will also review
several measures of academic achievement, the scoring systems used in formal
testing, and what testing actually tells us about a child's skill in
reading, writing, and math.
This workshop is designed for individuals involved
in the assessment and education of children with special needs, including:
parents, educators, psychologists, occupational and physical therapists,
speech and language therapists, and other professionals.
Continuing Education Units (CEU) available.
Workshop Presenters
Scott F. Johnson practices law in Concord,
New Hampshire, teaches law for Concord University School of Law and teaches
education law courses for Franklin Pierce Law Center. He is counsel in a
number of important special education cases and in Claremont v. Governor,
the case establishing that New Hampshire students have a fundamental right
to an adequate education. Attorney Johnson is the founder of NHEdLaw, LLC,
which publishes the New Hampshire Special Education Law Manual: A Guide for
Parents, Educators, Attorneys & Advocates written by Johnson and the
Education Law Resource Center, www.edlawrc.com which publishes Preventing
Physical Restraints in Public Schools: A Guide for Parents, Educators and
Professionals and provides national information and resources about
education law. Attorney Johnson provides trainings and consulting services
nationally to parents, educators, attorneys and other professionals involved
in education. He frequently writes and speaks nationally on education law
topics.
Dr. Elaine Holden, co-owner of The Reading
Foundation located in Amherst, New Hampshire, has been a reading
specialist/consultant in the New England area for over 30 years. Currently
she directs the tutorials for The Reading Foundation, is a professor in the
Graduate School of Education at Rivier College, Nashua, New Hampshire,
evaluates children both privately and for school districts in the area of
reading and related language disorders, and sits on the governing board for
the Association of Specialists in the Assessment of Intellectual Functioning
(ASAIF) a profession that only exists in the state of New Hampshire. Elaine
also is a member of the New Hampshire board of directors of The
International Dyslexia Association, and is the only Orton-Gillingham Academy
Fellow in the state of New Hampshire. Elaine lives with her 98 year-old
mother and 5 spoiled cats of varying temperament, in Peterborough, New
Hampshire, where she also keeps her antique cars, 18 foot sailboat, and
several thousand books.
Dr. Melissa Farrall has always had a strong
interest in language. She received her doctorate from Brown University in
1981 in the area of Slavic Linguistics, she then taught at Tufts University.
Dr. Farrall worked with Sweet Micro Systems to develop the text-to-speech
tables for early speech synthesis applications in 1984. Dr. Farrall received
her Master's from Rivier College in Learning Disabilities in 1994, and her
certification as a Specialist in the Assessment of Intellectual Functioning
in 1999. Dr. Farrall has taught courses in language, reading, cognition, and
assessment in the Graduate Department of Education at Rivier College for
nine years, and she sits on the board of the New Hampshire International
Dyslexia Association. Dr. Farrall has also taught in the public schools. Dr.
Farrall is one of the co-owners of The Reading Foundation, a business that
provides tutorials in reading and written expression, as well as assessment,
and consultation services. Dr. Farrall lives in Merrimack, New Hampshire
with her husband and two children, one of whom has a reading disability.

Registration fee is $75 per person.
